Pilosity

Hairy or not, we love you the same !

What is pilosity ?

You got pilosity, you got pilosity, everybody got pilosity!

It does not matter whether you have dark or pale skin, red or blonde pigmentation, puberty or adulthood : each person has a unique hair growth, which changes during their life ! Some people looks like more like a bear than a Siamese cat, but pilosity remains completely natural thing.

You can decide to live with your pilosity or irradiate some of it permanentely with hair removal techniques like intense pulsed light (IPL).

What can cause a person to have more or less pilosity than others?

The pilosity, whether you like it or not, it will be part of your life. Some live with it, others tolerate it and some manage it. But why do some people have more hair than other people ? Here are some reasons that affect your hair level below :

Heredity

Eyebrows are abundant or sparse, hair is curly, voluminous or fine: our genetic heritage transmits our physical characteristics and the composition of our genes. The hair system being no exception, heredity explains the structure of our hair, including its color and density. This is why, for example, we perceive a less abundant pilosity as well as lighter and more moderate hair growth in the northern populations compared to the Mediterranean populations.

Medication

Certain medications tend to alter the hair system of individuals. Although everyone is more or less sensitive to them, glucocorticoid-based treatments – such as cortisone and hydrocortisone – but also cyclosporine, diazoxide, minoxidil, danazol or even certain anabolic steroids can lead to increased hair growth.

Hormones

Hormonal changes have a direct impact on hair growth, whether they are of biological cause – such as pregnancy and puberty – or of pathological cause – such as hyperandrogenism. Influenced by the level of hormones in the body, hair growth can be normal or excessive.

Thus, an excessively high level of male hormones, a greater physiological sensitivity to them, or a decrease in female hormones (estrogen) as in the case of Stein-Leventhal syndrome – more commonly known as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) – or Cushing’s syndrome, can lead to a change in hair growth, pigmentation and density
