Stretch marks

These little welts on the skin

What is a stretch mark ?

Stretch marks are small scars with the appearance of thin lines or small welts that appear mostly on the buttocks, thighs, breasts or stomach. They appear when the skin is subjected to a sudden extension beyond its elasticity limits. It is an inflammatory reaction caused by the rupture of collagen and elastin fibers in the dermis

What can cause stretch marks to appear on the body ?

Here are the most common reasons below :

Puberty

At puberty, the body secretes more cortisol, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. The release of large amounts of cortisol blocks the action of fibroblasts – the cells that support connective tissue – and thus decreases collagen production. The flexibility and stretchability of the skin is reduced, while the body rapidly takes on new shapes. As a result, stretch marks can appear on certain areas, such as the thighs and buttocks.

Weight variation

Rapid weight gain, significant weight loss or an increase in muscle mass can cause stretch marks to appear. As the fibers have been rapidly stretched and/or strained, the alteration of the skin structure causes stretch marks to appear.

Pregnancy

Between 50 and 70% of women experience the appearance of stretch marks during their first pregnancy, mainly on the stomach and chest. In addition to varying cortisol production, pregnancy quickly and intensely stretches the skin. The elastic fibers are put to the test and at some point reach their maximum stretching capacity, which can lead to stretch marks

High cortisol levels

Apart from during puberty, cortisol levels can be high for various reasons. The adrenal glands produce more or too much cortisol during chronic stress in the second trimester of pregnancy or in certain diseases such as Cushing’s syndrome. The higher the level of cortisol, the less collagen is produced. The skin then loses its suppleness and elasticity and stretch marks may appear.
